In Ukraine, Easter is called Velykden, or The Great Day. As in many cultures, Velykden is both a religious and secular holiday combining Christian and ancient traditional practices and symbolism. The Devon Ukrainian Association in collaboration with Exeter Cathedral is pleased to host the second Ukrainian Orthodox Easter service and the blessing of Easter cakes (paska) and Easter eggs according to the Ukrainian tradition on 5 May at 12:00pm.
The service will be celebrated in Ukrainian by an Orthodox chaplain, a Ukrainian priest of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), Archimandrite Serhiy (Yarovyi) who is traveling to Exeter, especially for this occasion.
A prayer for Ukraine and the Ukrainian army will be read during the service.
All are welcome to attend this special service. Ukrainians and their English hosts and friends are especially invited to bring Easter cakes and Easter eggs, which, according to Ukrainian tradition, will be blessed during the service. After the service we plan to gather on Cathedral Green for a community picnic, as well as to play games and sing Ukrainian Spring songs called Vesnyanki.
We will direct people to an indoor space if the weather is not friendly.
