1991 – The Dawn
of Modern Statehood
The modern era of independence began on August 24, 1991. Following decades of Soviet rule, the Ukrainian people spoke with one voice.
In a nationwide referendum, an overwhelming majority—over 90%—voted for independence. This was not merely a legal transition, but a spiritual homecoming. It marked the birth of a sovereign state committed to democracy, human rights, and the peaceful coexistence of nations.
Symbols of Continuity
Throughout this journey, Ukraine has been held together by its traditions. Symbols like the Rushnyk (the ritual embroidered cloth) serve as a bridge between the past and the present. Just as the Rushnyk accompanies a Ukrainian from birth to death, our history is a continuous thread of resilience. Each stitch in our heritage represents a generation that refused to be silenced, ensuring that the spirit of Ukraine would survive every trial.
The Modern Struggle for Sovereignty
Independence is not a destination, but a constant act of courage. Since 2014, and most acutely since the full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine has been fighting a battle not only for its territory but for the very right to exist as a free people.
This struggle has unified Ukrainians globally and forged unbreakable bonds of solidarity with the international community. Today, our independence is defined by our resilience, our willingness to sacrifice, and our unwavering belief in a peaceful, democratic future.
